My Life in the North End — ElEONORA GOMEZ BAS

I made My Life in the North End during the second year of bookbinding school in Boston. Having just learned how to make a "flat back binding", my first impulse was to write and illustrate a story, and put this newfound technique into use. (I still recall my teacher, Mark, commenting on my need to always fill the pages of our “book models", which we learned to make using only blank paper.)

The book was made in the year 2003, a time when digital photography was still in its incipient stages and cameras were capable of saving only a few images onto floppy disks (if you look closely, you can find my Sony “Mavica” in one of the pictures!) For that reason, most of the photos in the book are pretty low resolution. I guess I'm OK with that...

My Life in the North End documents a brief period in the life of my cat, Minou, as told by Minou himself. What it doesn't mention (because I was unaware of his international fate at the time), is that Minou ended up moving to Caracas, where he lived the rest of his life climbing palm trees and basking under the tropical midday sun.
